Ever since the internet went down, United Airlines has had a large amount of trouble to deal with. Without the internet, there is no GPS, and without GPS, the planes or the pilots can't figure out how to get to destinations. This basically shut down all flights. Any remaining flights were downed, leaving all passengers stranded and having to get to where they needed by car or train. The New York Stock Exchange was equally affected with the loss of internet. Without the internet, those who work there can't communicate with other stock exchange corporations as quickly, leaving them to communicate via mail and telephone. Also, any online records of sales and money amount can no longer be viewed, effectively lowering the NYSE's amount of money to 0. Even worse, anyone who held stock within the exchange has now lost it, along with other data that was important to the exchange, such as contact information and sales records. Both corporations have had a catastrophic loss in money and as long as the internet stays out, they won't be earning anymore.

There is unethical behavior everywhere we go, and the internet and web are no exception. Common examples are posting information someone didn't want up, pretending that you are someone else in a chat room, and of course copying and pasting someone's work to your document and claiming that it's yours.
One type of unethical behavior on the internet is the fabrication of online data. Examples include altering school academic records and forging signed documents( found here: http://guides.lib.umich.edu/c.php?g=283365&p=1887165 at the very bottom of the page) During December of 2014, an army official was browsing through a social network site when she found an offensive video.(full site here: http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=123850) She commented as such, and was viciously attacked by several others. Some of them were even soldiers, so the soldier in question, Katrina Moerk, went to those soldiers and explained to them why they were wrong. Because of her willingness to stand up, she received an Army Commendation Medal at a ceremony in the Pentagon. Besides putting up videos that are offensive, there are many other unethical acts that can be done on the internet: identity theft, piracy, informational and financial fraud, and disruption of computers/services. (full description: http://www.ehow.com/info_7806377_five-unethical-uses-computers.html) Moral of the story: don't be a cyber bully. There are also ways people can be unethical within a community, hurting both themselves and others at the same time. Common examples are cheating, politicians lying to voters, and a company polluting the environment. One large recent example of this is in Egypt(more info found here: http://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2015/07/09/egypts-clerics-condemn-gay-marriage-law/) The Egyptian Al-Azhar claims that gayness in unethical, and "a crime to humanity." This, as well as many other controversial debates, have been sparked by the Supreme Court's decision to make gay marriage legal. Another huge concern is racism. This was sparked hundreds of years ago, and continues to this day. It is always the same thing: whites discriminating other people with different skin colors. And it isn't just racism. People also dislike homosexuality, mental and physical conditions, age, sex, and what country your from. Unfortunately, racism isn't going to go away. Because it is unethical, we are going to have to do something about it. In the recent years we have, but it isn't enough. By being ethical to others, you could make the world better and end all discrimination.
The world is a corrupt place. Many people do unlawful or devious things to get up to the top. When something is unethical, it isn't morally correct. That can happen when one's morals are broken. Such examples are lying, spreading rumors, and bullying. One type of unethical act is lying on your resume for a job. This can be especially bad if your boss finds out about it. Another act is claiming something is yours but it really isn't. That is plagiarism. Here are some others on this website:
http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-unethical-behavior.html One recent unethical act was in April, found here: http://www.armytimes.com/story/military/2015/07/08/glenda-lock-fired-mcdonald-army-health-center-investigatoin/29871027/ An army colonel was fired from her job because she had tried to "bend" the rules after it was found out that she was overweight. She also bullied other soldiers to keep quiet about the incident, but it was to no avail. There are also unethical acts in business. Businesses may exploit tax loopholes to avoid paying high taxes while making billions in profit. Others can be found here: http://study.com/academy/lesson/unethical-behavior-in-business-definition-examples.html A more common unethical act is when a person with a high position abuses the power, making the lower employees do a lot more work for the same amount of pay. Have you ever wondered what the difference between copyright infringement and plagiarism is? Copyright is a law provided by the United States that protects an author's original work in the fields of literature, drama, art, architecture, music, and other intellectual works. Plagiarism is stealing another's work and claiming it as your own. The difference between copyright infringement and plagiarism is that as bad as plagiarism is, it is not illegal, whereas copyright infringement is. Also, in plagiarism, you are offending the author, and in copyright infringement, you are offending the copyright holder. The difference between the holder and author is that the holder bought the rights to the work, and the author still owns the work. Some of the things that can be copyrighted on the web are links, originally created text, audio and videos, unique markup language sequences(html, vrml, etc.), a list of websites compiled by an individual or organization, and all of the unique elements that make up the original nature of the material. Here's a very famous copyright-er: There are certain things you can and cannot do when creating a website. You CAN link other websites to yours, but always ask permission before doing something like that. You can also use free graphics on your site, but only if they say so. If they are not, ask permission. What you CANNOT do is put someone else's contents on your site. You also can't just copy and paste someone else's work to your own document, but you can give credit to the original source if you do. You also can't incorporate someone's email into a document or forward someone's email to another without permission. You can't copy and paste work and content from another website and say it's yours, but you can quote small amounts of content. The same goes for logos: you can't put it on your site without permission, but you can with permission because the creators want to know who's using it.
Some penalties of copyright infringement include paying the dollar amount in damage, the law pays anywhere from 200 to $150,000 for each infringed document, and in a court, the infringer must pay all court/attorney fees. The court can also issue an injunction act to stop the infringing acts. Fair use is the one exception to copyright. It states that one can use limited amounts of copyrighted material without permission for certain uses: commentary, parody, criticism, research, teaching, search engines, reporting, scholarships, and library archives. Fair use is the only way someone can use copyrighted material without permission, making it extremely important for using something if it is copyrighted and needs to be used right away. That is the basics of copyright, plagiarism, and fair use. Hope that helps clear everything up about everything you were confused.
Here is a quick interview of my mother. I have asked her what her life, both personally and professionally, is now without the internet.
Ever since the internet went down, my life has changed, and it has changed in two different ways. For one, I have changed socially. I now see more of my family as they can't work in the same manner as they used to. Without the internet, they can't communicate via email with other parts of their building as well as other companies throughout the country, so their work hours are shortened. I also get to see more of my friends as they have no internet and more free time. Another social change is that I, as well as my class in school, are a lot more interactive with the teacher because there is no internet to play games or do the online lessons. This makes school a lot more interesting, as well as much more exciting. The loss of the internet has also made me more independent as I now have to look up anything I want to know in an encyclopedia or any other book at the library.
The other way in which my life was changed was emotionally. My emotions have remained relatively the same as before the internet, but there are some differences. There will always be that little sense of sadness that you can't use the internet, like watching videos or playing games. However, this means more face to face time with my friends. This makes me significantly happier, and as a result I feel like a better person. The loss of the internet makes me much more cheerful and in some cases more helpful. The loss of the internet has also given me more time to do things I might not have done should the internet have stayed. I now help out in soup kitchens or go out with my school to help the homeless. Overall, the loss of the internet has had a generally positive effect on my being and is going to help me become a better person. |
